She Kills Monsters
by Qui Nguyen
She Kills Monsters is a show about loss. It is also a show about beating up a giant cube of demonic Jell-O that happens to be named after your boyfriend. The story is split between two worlds, two sisters, and two choices: to give up or to go on. And while most of us don’t usually have to make that choice while facing down a five-headed dragon, we see the road ahead diverge on a daily basis. Telling this particular story, one that on the surface seems to be light and straightforward, was harder and more rewarding than I ever could have imagined. It was a dream come true to direct on the stage of the Yale Repertory Theater, particularly when it was for a show as silly and stirring as this one.
